In Hawaii in 2002, a group of artists assembled to create an experimental collaborative exhibition. We titled it To Where Does the One Return? after the Zen koan addressing the deconstruction of self. The centerpiece of the exhibition/performance was a multimedia piece conceived for a series of microtonally tuned porcelain gongs created by ceramic sculptor Stephen Freedman. The music composed by Dusan Bogdanovic comprised a cycle of deconstructing patterns, to be performed upon the gongs, by seven percussionists from the University of Hawaii, Hilo and conducted by John Kusinski. Within a gallery space, an installation, which supported the gongs, evolved, constructed by visual artists Randy Takaki, Kaori Ukaji and Chris Churchill from the remnants of a burnt building. In a series of performances during the month-long process of creation, transformation and destruction of the installation, performers, including Jack Boyle, a Bhuto dancer, and Cynthia Albers, a modern dancer, interacted with the exhibition, elaborating its concept.
